Messy lunch

Normal lunchtime prep

(11th May 2020)

"In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf."

Lunch was served in our messy lunch bowl (paella pan). I attempted to make it look like the first page of The Very Hungry Caterpillar story. Baby loved his messy lunch and even had a lot of the egg which he normally refuses or drops on the floor from his high chair. Lunch consisted of black beans and lentils (blue sky), poached egg (moon), and wild garlic flower and leaves (leaf and the egg).

Feed the caterpillar

Quite a large amount of prep to make, especially as he didn't do it

(12th May 2020)

So I went about drawing, painting and cutting out a caterpillar's head and mouth for a post it through game. Baby hasn't really shown much interest in these activities before but I thought with it being so big he might get into it.... incorrect! Baby just chewed the plastic fruit and vegetables and then proceeded, with Beagle, in destroying my artwork. I rescued it and it has gone away for a while, it will come back out when he shows a little more interest in these games.

Fun lunch

Normal lunchtime prep

(13th May 2020)

Super easy, just arranged his lunch straight onto the high chair to look like the caterpillar. It made no difference to Baby (at 9 months) but I enjoyed it. Lunch was pesto pasta, rice and quinoa (ground), cucumber (body), and a strawberry (head).

Messy play: Vegetable Dig

As with a lot of messy play there's a good bit of prep to set up, but for us the reward and time of play is totally worth it.

(13th May 2020)

Got the trusty paella pan back out and put in the plastic potato, carrot, garlic and onion, made the edible mud and poured it over. I slightly rearranged the vegetables so they were sticking out for Baby to see. We has to scatter treats in the grass for Beagle due to the cocoa in the edible mud (Beagle would eat cocoa given the chance). Baby went straight in and tasted the mud, which he wasn't a fan of due to it being incredibly bitter, after that he found the onion! After all the vegetables were found I introduced his water cup which he had great fun pouring all over.

Orange slice water tray

Super quick set up

(14th May 2020)

It was a warm enough day to do this outside on the tuff tray. Baby crawled straight to it and tucked in, orange is Baby's favourite! He splashed about, ate it, fed some to Beagle and had a great time.

Story basket

Very quick set up

(15th May 2020)

Items:

  • Plastic apple, orange and strawberry

  • Real plum and apple

  • Soft but spiky ball

  • Green and blue scarfs

  • Butterfly toy

This was our first #storybasket and we loved it! You collect a load of toys/items that relate to the story. We will be doing a lot more of these.

I set it up the night before and this was our activity for the day. First was independent play with the objects and then we read the story whilst using items in the basket to enhance the story e.g when the caterpillar was crawling I rolled the spiky ball over Baby's body, when the caterpillar was eating through the leaf I put the green scarf over baby's head and slowly removed it.
